Mysticism, Evelyn Underhill writes, is “the art of union with reality.” In our new book, Practical Mysticism, she makes this transformative art approachable and attainable for, as she cheerfully notes in her subtitle, ordinary people. The book is practical, Underhill explains, because it trains the “latent faculties” of readers to the liberating awareness of new levels of the world. “The world of Reality exists for all,” she says, “and all may participate in it, unite with it, according to their measure and to the strength and purity of their desire.”
Underhill begins by answering the question, “What is mysticism,” and goes on to look at reality itself and preparing to perceive and experience this reality. She moves on to meditation and recollection, three forms of contemplation, and concludes with an explanation of how these things enable all people to participate in the mystical life.
